Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Founders Brewing Company KBS (Kentucky
Breakfast Stout). I had heard and read quite a bit about this beer and it was
with great anticipation that I cracked this bottle open. My good buddy sent me
a care package that included this gem.
From the Founders Brewing company website: “What
we’ve got here is an imperial stout brewed with a massive amount of coffee and
chocolates, then cave-aged in oak bourbon barrels for an entire year to make
sure wonderful bourbon undertones come through in the finish. Makes your taste
buds squeal with delight.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours
pitch black with a tiny mocha head and spotty lacing.
Aroma: Bourbon,
coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, English toffee, molasses and a slight
coconut scent.
Taste: Bourbon up
front followed by coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malts, molasses, vanilla and
oak barrel goodness. The chocolate component is amazing and ranges from bitter
to sweet.
Overall: Rich,
creamy and COMPLETELY worth the hype, Founders Brewing Company KBS (Kentucky
Breakfast Stout) is simply delicious. At
11.2% ABV this is a beer that I would want to have around all the time. Looks like I need to convince my buddy to
send more. If you see this beer, buy
it. Amazing!
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
