Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Fifty Fifty Brewing Company Old
Conundrum On Wood - Barley Wine Style Ale Aged In Bourbon Barrels. I picked
this bottle up at The Wine Club in San Jose (here). They have a small craft beer
section, but they have an incredible selection. If you're anywhere near
The Wine Club go visit them and tell 'em Mark from NorCal Beer Blog sent you!
Commercial description: “Barley Wine aged in Oak Bourbon
Barrels. A showcase of malty richness and complex intense flavors. Vanilla,
caramel and oak shine through with the barrel character.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours
a hazy brown with a thin tan head and good lacing.
Aroma: Sweet
caramel, oak, bourbon, toasted malts, toffee and vanilla with a slight pine and
spice hop scent in the background.
Taste: Sweet
caramel, bourbon, oak, toasted malts, toffee, vanilla and what seems like a
touch of maple and earthy, herbal and spicy hops.
Overall: Rich and
sweet, Fifty Fifty Brewing Company Old Conundrum On Wood is a delicious barrel
aged Barley Wine. This 9.8% ABV offering was so good I picked up another bottle
to cellar for a little while. Highly
recommended!
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
