Wicked Weed Brewing Black Angel - Black Sour Ale Aged on Tart Cherries in Bourbon Barrels

Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.

Tonight’s featured beer is Wicked Weed Brewing Black Angel - Black Sour Ale Aged on Tart Cherries in Bourbon Barrels.  I picked this bottle up at Stella Brew (here) in Winston-Salem, NC. They have an excellent selection and we’re very helpful helping me pick out some local “must have” beers to bring home.  If you find yourself in the area stop in, buy some beverages and tell them that Mark from NorCal Beer Blog sent you!

Commercial description: “Cherry pie! Cherry pie! Cherry pie! This light and fruity ale is black in color, though your palate would never know it. Black Angel is fermented on the Wicked Wild yeast and then moved into stripped down Four Roses bourbon barrels and aged on tart cherries, sweet cherries, and Italian plums. The white oak and roast malt add notes of vanilla and graham cracker that, when blended with the tart sweetness of the fruit, bring out a robust cherry pie flavor.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours a dark reddish brown with a thin tan head and sparse lacing.
Aroma: Tart cherries, sweet and bready malts, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, oak and a faint scent of bourbon.
Taste: A mix of sweet and tart cherry flavors, roasted, sweet and chocolate malts, vanilla caramel, some oak and bourbon. As it warms there’s a light brett funk that comes forward.
Overall: Balanced and complex, Wicked Weed Brewing Black Angel - Black Sour Ale Aged on Tart Cherries in Bourbon Barrels is delicious.  This 7.2% ABV offering is mildly sour and highly recommended.

Cheers!

Mark Harvey
