Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Firestone Walker Brewing Company §ucaba
Barrel Aged Barley Wine - No. 4 – 2014.
From the Firestone Walker Brewing Company website: “A true
English Barley wine. Big boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combine
with soft chocolate malt undertones. Complex malt flavors framed in oak
with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut and a touch of dark
cherry. A sipping beer best served in a Brandy snifter.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours
a dark copper color with a tan head and good lacing.
Aroma: Bourbon,
vanilla, chocolate, caramel, toffee, roasted malt, oak, coconut and dark
fruits.
Taste: Follows
the nose with added flavors…caramel, butterscotch, bourbon, vanilla, oak,
toffee, chocolate, dark fruits, roasted malts and coconut.
Overall: Sweet
and pleasantly boozy, Firestone Walker Brewing Company §ucaba Barrel Aged
Barley Wine is outstanding. At 13.5% ABV
this huge beer is something I’d actually enjoy drinking with great
regularity. I have purchased a few of
these gems for cellaring, but I’m not sure how long they’ll stay cellared due
to my incredible need to drink ‘em. Exceptional beer!
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
