Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Founders Brewing Curmudgeon - Old
Ale Brewed With Molasses And Oak Aged. I picked this beer up in Texas at Grapevine
Beer & Wine (here).
From the Founders Brewing website: “Think
classic seafaring ports, local pubs and weathered old fishermen. This old ale
is brewed with molasses and an insane focus on the malt bill, then oak-aged.
The result is a strong, rich, malty delight that’s deceptively smooth and
drinkable.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours
the color of caramel with a thin almost non-existent off-white head and spotty
lacing.
Aroma: Sweet,
molasses, caramel, toffee, raisins, oak, brown sugar and cherries.
Taste: Molasses, caramelized
brown sugar, sweet malts, raisins, toffee, vanilla, honey, oak and a slight bit
nutty.
Overall: Delicious
and smooth, Founders Brewing Curmudgeon is extremely drinkable despite the fact
that it is 9.8% ABV. With its mildly
bitter finish and low alcohol burn I could see putting a couple of these away
in a night (maybe a few) and I would want to…this is a great beer!
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
