Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Firestone
Walker Brewing Company Stickee Monkee Barrel Aged Central Coast Quad. I
grew incredibly impatient as I awaited the arrival of this newest barrel aged
beer. I was fortunate enough to have a good friend that was making a trip to
the brewery so he picked up this along with a few other Firestone Walker
Brewing Company offerings for me. I have since purchased (and am now
cellaring) A LOT of this beer.
From the Firestone Walker Brewing Company website: “A
Belgian Quad by recipe, but aging it in spirits barrels garners its own
category: Central Coast Quad. A beer formulated to sit on the sweeter and
malty side so that we could utilize it for blending. Turbinado brown
sugar from Mexico and Belgian candi sugar add wonderful molasses
flavors. It has a full body and lush texture with barrel expression all
over this beer: toasted oak, coconut, leather and cigar tobacco.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours
a dark ruby brown with a nice tight beige head and decent lacing.
Aroma: Oak,
bourbon, sweet malts, molasses, vanilla, brown sugar, dark fruits, toffee and a
light booze.
Taste: Brown
sugar, toffee, bourbon, oak, dark fruits, caramel, molasses, vanilla, coconut
and a touch boozy.
Overall: Thick,
sticky and tasty, Firestone Walker Brewing Company Stickee Monkee Barrel Aged
Central Coast Quad is amazing. This
beer, at 13.4% ABV, is not as boozy as you’d think. Sweet, decadent and most definitely one to
seek out, I’m glad I have several of these in the cellar for future enjoyment.
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
