Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Cigar City Brewing Hotter Than
Helles Lager. I need to start this review by saying I’m not a huge Lager
fan. I don’t tend to buy them and it has
been some time since I’ve found one that I enjoyed particularly, but for this
string of reviews I thought I should give this one a shot…strictly for review
purposes…
From the Cigar City Brewing website:
“Our Munich Lager is a nod to the thirst quenching lagers of Germany. Our
Helles has a sweet malt expression that is balanced by floral bitterness from
the use of German Hallertaur Mittelfruh hops. A very refreshing beer that
will also entice you by its subtle complexity and drinkability.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours a golden-yellow color with a huge white
head with spotty lacing.
Aroma: Sweet malts, citrus, bready-grainy-cereal malts and
an unmistakable Hallertau hop scent.
Taste: Wow! Malty,
fruity, grainy with just the right balance of sweetness and spice. Slight Lager
yeast presence, honey and a dry grainy aftertaste.
Overall: Refreshing and extremely drinkable, Cigar City
Brewing Hotter Than Helles Lager is a Lager I would drink again and again. It is delicious! This light and tasty 5% ABV
gem is a great beer for a summer session or anytime you crave something crisp and
clean.
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
