Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is Avery Brewing Company Mephistopheles
Stout - released November 2012 - Batch No. 8 - 1062 cases.
From the Avery Brewing Company website: “Mephistopheles
is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal
black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes,
anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized
dark fruits and a double espresso finish. Cellarable for 10+ years.
Mephistopheles is the final installment of “The Demons of
Ale” series.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours
black with a large tan head and soapy lacing.
Aroma: Dark
roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, dark fruits, spice, molasses, boozy and a
slight coffee scent.
Taste: Dark
malts, dark chocolate, dark fruits, burnt sugar, anise, rum and a slight
espresso presence.
Overall: Rich, creamy,
sweet and delicious, Avery Brewing Company Mephistopheles Stout is impressive.
This 16.2% ABV offering hides the alcohol well which makes it quite dangerous. Extremely drinkable and something I would
really like to find more of. Highly recommended!
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
