Hello beer lovers and welcome to another edition of the
NorCal Beer Blog's brew review.
Tonight’s featured beer is The Bruery Ignis Fatuus - Porter Brewed
With Pumpkins & Spices. I picked this up at Santa Clara Liquors (here). If you get a
chance, head in there and tell ‘em that Mark from NorCal Beer Blog sent
you. You’ll be glad you did – they have an incredible selection!
Commercial description: “Ignis Fatuus is a special brew
created just in time for Autumn activities. The base is a rich, robust porter
that was brewed with an addition of puréed pumpkins. Like all great pumpkin
recipes, we then added a subtle addition of seasonal spices to balance with the
roasty character. We invite you to enjoy the nuanced flavors while telling
ghost stories around an illuminating jack-o'-lantern. Ignis Fatuus is best
enjoyed fresh, but may develop pleasantly over time.”
Let’s get started!
Appearance: Pours
dark brown, nearly black with a large tan head and lots of lacing.
Aroma: Roasted
pumpkin, roasted malts, dark chocolate, pumpkin pie spice, brown sugar,
vanilla, caramel, molasses and a slight coffee scent.
Taste: Roasted
pumpkin, pumpkin pie spices – cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, roasted malts,
caramel, brown sugar, dark chocolate, dark fruits, vanilla and slight coffee
flavor.
Overall: Robust,
mildly sweet and smooth, The Bruery Ignis Fatuus is an outstanding beverage! This 8.3% ABV offering is absolutely worth
trying if you can get your hands on some.
A bit pricey, but I’m glad I picked it up.
Cheers!
Mark Harvey
